Demonstrations in Micronesia LP
Als einstiger glühender Verehrer von Hammerhead, der Noiseband auf dem seit langem in die Asche gegangenen Amphetamine Reptile Labels, die ebenfalls irgendwann Mitte der 90er in der Versenkung verschwunden waren, musste ich erst im Jahre 2003 erstaunt feststellen, dass es mit Vaz gewissermaßen eine legitime Nachfolgecombo gibt, in welcher die ehemaligen Hammerhead- Protagonisten Apollo Liftoff (b,v) und Isolation DH-9 (d) als Duo agieren. Ersterer Kollege hat mittlerweile den Bass gegen eine Gitarre getauscht, ansonsten muss man sich soundtechnisch gar nicht so groß umstellen, denn Vaz machen da weiter, wo Hammerhead seinerzeit mit Duh, The Big City aufgehört haben. Der notorische, treibende Noise-Punk früherer Tage war auf diesem Album bereits einer etwas differenzierteren Herangehensweise gewichen und Hammerhead hatten zunehmend begonnen, auch verstärkt Melodie und leicht obskuren Post- Wave-Trash in ihren Sound zu integrieren. Genau an dieser Stelle setzen nun Vaz mit ihrem Debütalbum ?Demonstrations In Macronesia an, welches ursprünglich wohl bereits in 2000 erschien, damals auf einem kleinen Label namens Thin The Herd Records (die CD dagegen via Load Records). Das gute Stück wurde nun von den beiden befreundeten deutschen Labels X-Mist und The Company With The Golden Arm wieder ausgegraben und exklusiv auf hübschem, grünlich-gelbem Vinyl wiederveröffentlicht (wenigsten sieht die mir vorliegende Version so aus), und zwar nur auf Vinyl. Dazu sollte man vielleicht wissen, dass inzwischen auch schon eine zweite Vaz-Platte, diesmal dann auf Gold Standard Laboratories (GSL), rausgekommen ist, welche sich ?Dying To Meet You? nennt, wovon X-Mist ebenfalls das europäische Vinyl vertickt. Bevor ich mit einem eigenen Charakterisierungsversuch zur Musik von Vaz anrücke, das hier steht im Info zu ?Demonstrations In Macronesia?: ?Musikalisch bewegt sich der unglaublich energiegeladene und gleichzeitig melodische Noise-Rock von Vaz zwischen Joy Division, Daydream-Nation-Ära? Sonic Youth und Arab On Radar. Vaz zählen definitiv zur ersten Liga des US-Undergrounds, neben Bands wie Ex-Models, Lightning Bolt und Black Dice.? Dabei gehen Vaz sehr eigenwillig vor und erzeugen, zumal sie ja ?nur? als Duo unterwegs sind, einen mächtigen Wall of Sound, den andere Bands mit doppelt so viel Personal nicht zustande bringen. Live führte das während ihrer ersten Show in Stuttgart 2003 bisweilen dazu, dass man, weil irgendwie der Gitarrenverstärker nicht richtig funktionierte, regelrecht mit Schlagzeugsalven eingedeckt wurde, die so dermaßen laut waren, dass die Anlage es nicht wirklich verkraftet hat. Auf der Platte hört man übrigens auch einen Bass, wobei dieser wie auch die Gitarre stets durch diverse, schlierige und schlingernde Effektnebel gejagt wird, das Schlagzeug (welches ja auch s chon bei Hammerhead ganz bemerkenswert und charakteristisch war, weil stets so total paranoid- treibend gespielt) pumpt meistens wie Hölle und bleibt dabei trotzdem luftig und differenziert, na ja, und obendrauf packt Apollo Liftoff seine sprichwörtlich über den Dingen schwebenden Vocals, die mindestens ebenso manisch und besessen wirken wie die Musik selbst, zugleich aber auch total erhaben und souverän, sofern mir irgendjemand noch folgen kann? Textlich geben sich Vaz kryptisch und geheimnisvoll, wobei ich festgestellt habe, dass der Opener Blocked by satellites der Platte, obwohl ich nicht genau sagen kann, worum es in diesem Text eigentlich geht, fast schon als Zustandsbeschreibung taugt: Served up a sentence, stalled inside my spine. Cold hesitation liquidizing time. Entering transmit, N-code A2Z. Enter the transmit, satellites blocking me. Then a lost and hollow echo circled in, pulsing dead air into waves. Originally released in 2000 as an LP-only release, Demonstrations in Micronesia drifts down like a fog. The guitar and drums spin tales fraught with doom. Science fictions themes abound on this record. Unbelievable songs combined with spooky otherworldly voices make a record you will not soon forget. Response to this record has been tremendous. VAZ is a two piece formed from the ashes of HAMMERHEAD. The band has relocated from the Minneapolis area to New York. They bring with them thundering drums and shards of stunning ray gun riff-age all bundled together into tight song-based attack. They've toured with LIGHTNING BOLT and MELT BANANA and will be appreciated by fans of intelligent heavy music everywhere. File next to the MELVINS, THRONES, and KARP. This is a classic that deserves your attention.
1st full album by ex-HAMMERHEAD (the AMREP-band!) - totally BRILLIANT - and definitely one of the BEST Noise-Rock records you can get these days!!!

Dieser grandiosen Platte in einem Review gerecht zu werden, ist schlichtweg unmöglich!!! Allein schon Verpackung und Artwork sind so dermassen umfangreich, aufwendig und luxuriös - das muss man sehen, um es zu glauben: Plastikschutzhülle mit Siebdruck, dazu vierfarbiges LP-Cover und Faltposter-Beilage im selben Graphik-Stil wie schon bei der ersten Platte, sowie ein Aufkleber (welcher der erste Teil einer Serie ist, die dann mit der im Herbst erscheinenden TELEMARK LP fort- gesetzt wird - ha, was für eine Marketing-Strategie!). 15 Songs auf fettes schwarzes Vinyl gepresst und natürlich auch wieder das komplette Album als Bonus-CD-Beilage!!! Für all das zusammen, ist das bei dem Preis fast schon geschenkt... Abgesehen davon ist die Musik auch noch ein Knaller: Klingt in etwa so, als hätte man NOMEANSNO und DEAD KENNEDYS in einen Quirl gesteckt, das Ganze gut gewürzt und mächtig aufgepeppt! Kurz gesagt: Eine HAMMERSCHEIBE!!!!

The artwork and packaging alone are so incredibly extensive & luxurious, you have to see it to believe it! Full-color cover and full-color fold- out-poster, plus stickers packed into a silkscreened plastic- sleeve. And inside you'll not only find a thick piece of vinyl, but also a bonus-CD containing all of the songs as well: 15 ass-kicking killer-tracks, like putting NOMEANSNO and the DEAD KENNEDYS into a blender, spiced up and speedened up! Schwer einzuordnen! Irgendwo zwischen Kirmesorgel, Giant Ant Farm, Varieté, World Inferno Friendship Society, Les Savy Fav auf Drogen, Kettenkarrussell und hysterischem Irrsinn, der tanzbar ist. So, das Ganze jetzt in Musik umgesetzt und es passt. Nichts für schwache Nerven oder Stoiker, eher für die Zappelphillips, tanzwütige Regelzeitstudenten und Soundtüftler, die den ganzen Tag Zeit haben, sich ein Lied zehnmal im Laden anzuhören, um dann doch eine anspruchsvollere Platte zu kaufen. Definitv anspruchsvoll, zugepackt mit Ideen und einer alles dominierenden Zeltlagerorgel. Langweilige Platte hat dieses Label auch noch nicht veröffentlicht, alle Achtung!
Imagine a Q. Tarantino movie mixed with a Manga comic and adding a slight city of lost children soundtrack influence to it on a polka rhythmic basis. This will get you a fucking great, weird attack on your dance abilities. The explicit non-glamour lyrical stabs and stacatto-flavoured beats dissects the listeners mind while still pushing the contorted audience up on the floor. Thirty minutes of an expressway to benign paranoia and back is the drug generated through the live shows; endorphins retort and the urge to dance is no less than what Devo ever accomplished with Whip It. Hawnay Troof has in the past collaborated with many of the most talented people comprising the alternative music scene today (The SoftPink Truth, Stereo Total, Gravy Train!!! etc.).

Lieder übers Häuserbesitzen (zusammen mit seinem Freund Brian Sokel) und das dazugehörige Renovieren/Abreißen mit nem Hammer, Enttäuschung über Highschoolfreunde, die jetzt George Bush ins Amt helfen ("election debacle" im Jahre 2000), einen Freund, der mit seinem Jeep durch Afrika fährt und mehrfach knapp am Tod vorbeischrammt (Atom = Cpt.Safety), "head gone vertical" (ein Cover von AM/FM, Brians Band), dazu ein Song ("fraudulent"), wo der Meister erst in zwei Jahren nach dem Sinn des Textes gefragt werden will... catchy, funny, awesome!!!

See now there´s this really fine line when it comes to doing catchy, poppy punk right without it sounding generic and dated. And of course there´s one country that pulls it off better than the rest of the world, every time - it´s Canada. From the Bonaduces through to Painted Thin via Porter Hall, Canada knows what the fuck is up (and i think the country definitely ha slabels like Endearing Records to thank for that) ... well Sixty Stories features Paul Furgale from Painted Thin, and there´s definitely a latter Painted Thin (and Bonaduces) vibe here - those "from the heart" slacker style vocals, the unbelievable hooks and just an all around greatness in its honesty. What seperates this band from Painted Thin though is the addition of "keyboards and beeps" that just add to the awesome popiness of it all. Now we´re not talking Get Up Kids rip off here, although i think fans of that "lost it more than Shades Apart" piece of shit may well think Sixty Stories are a great band ... but just listen to the track "Jessica" for some seriously clever, poppy, almost "John Huges" influenced keyboard pop rockage that just fucking builds up into one incredible, anthemic, multi-layered and just totally perfect song! Oh yeah, and on top of that the lyrics are fucking brilliant - "Less of Me" is about Anorexia, and reminded me somewhat of Sonic Youth´s "Tunic" although not musically of course. Basically, if i don´t shut up now i never will ... but if you see this record anywhere, pick it up - it´s one of the best this year.

Woah, this is pretty crazy, I can´t really describe what this is.Track one starts as a kind of hyperactive garage/punk/lo-fi thing of a song before it descends and degrades itself into a filthy mess of feedback and squelchy howls of (possibly) electronics. Track two is a good builder of a song with a semi-restrained feel but also a certain unrelenting energy to it. I guess this is quite Sonic Youth-y at points. Track three "Belgian Waffles" reminds me of a more insane Refused if they went even more experimental than they did on "that" albumand tooks loads of mushrooms in the studio. We got organs, drum machines, samples AND a rock band all mixed together. Ok, hardly revolutionary but these guys do it really fucking well. Damn, this was recorded in 2001, only now it´s got released! Hm.

God damnit, what a fucking hell of an evening! Arriving at the JuZ completely exhausted and wet by a fucking thunderstorm - remeber riding bikes is dangerous when a thunderstorm just broke out, right? Anyway, Eniac from Hamburg /Germany (you know, the city where the supposed terrorists resided for quite some time) was about to start one of the greatest evening ever! A wonderful band, playing chaotic hardcore somewhere between the Victim's Family and Acheborn. It was a lively show holding a pretty sympathic and energetic band. After about an hour their set has come to an end and it surely has not been the last time I saw them live. This is a fucking promise. What came next, was the most awesome show I've ever had the pleasure to attend. Honestly, World Inferno from what remains of New York City was luckily in Germany when it (!) happened. "We're the best of what remains" as the singer introduced themselves, always sticking to the real thing, the pleasure of it all. That guy, I guess, is the born entertainer and yes, talking a hell lot of sarcastic stuff do make ppl sexy. Hell yeah! It was a show full of joy, fireballs and energie catching most people standing restlessly in the audience. You can best describe it by one single word: Awesome. Once upon a time, I though the Mighty Mighty Bosstones could communicate that image, but these days are gone. The World Inferno kicks the shit out of this rotten scene. Danceable, passionate and full of superlatives. Believe it or not! After like three encores and hours of playing they were gone. Cities come and cities go - but there will always be an INFERNO!!!!!!!!
